Arsenal are on the verge of completing a deal for Gremio defender Walter Kannemann.
The north London club are understood to have tabled a £10.5 million offer for the 28-year-old centre-back earlier this week in the hope of beating Italian club Sampdoria to his services.
Calciomercato claims that Arsenal remain hopeful of getting a transfer over the line for Walter Kannemann, who is considered one of the best defenders in South American football.
Unai Emery may need to strengthen his side on a budget, depending on the outcome of Arsenal’s Europa League final with city rivals Chelsea later this month, and the South American is considered good value for money.
Walter Kannemann has spent the past three years in Brazil with Gremio, making 129 appearances for the club despite being Argentina international.
Meanwhile, the Gunners hope to sell Shkodran Mustafi to Milan but will only have a budget of around £40 million for new signings if they fail to qualify for the Champions League.
That means they will have to be creative in the transfer market, and that has led them to look at Walter Kannemann, who has impressed in recent seasons.
The 28-year-old has a release clause of £17 million, which Gremio will hold out for, but the Gunners will try to get him for slightly under that valuation as they try and stretch their transfer budget this window.
Danny Welbeck, Stephan Lichtsteiner and Petr Cech will all leave Emirates when their contracts expire, while the Gunners are open to offers for Shkodran Mustafi, Henrikh Mkhitaryan Mesut Ozil and Mohamed Elneny.
