Dwight Gayle is the latest name to be linked with Aston Villa as the search for a new centre-forward goes on. Villans want to secure attacking reinforcements and have been credited with an interest in a host of forwards in the first ten days of the winter transfer window.

AC Milan striker Krzysztof Piatek, Chelsea duo Olivier Giroud and Michy Batshuayi are all said to be targeted, while there is also talk of Christian Benteke making a return to the club. Magpies hitman Dwight is now being tipped for a move to Villa Park this month.

The 29-year-old centre-forward scored 24 times on loan at West Bromwich Albion last campaign as they fell just short in their hunt for promotion but his game time back in the northeast has been severely restricted.

Magpies could be willing to let him leave on loan this month but are believed to be keen on inserting an obligation to buy clause in any potential deal. Dean Smith wanted to complete the signing of a striker before Sunday’s clash with Man City but on Friday admitted defeat with regards to that deadline.
