Chelsea centre-back David Luiz has defended Maurizio Sarri’s debut season at the Bridge and says the club should do all they can to keep him this transfer window.
The Italian manager tasted the first piece of silverware in his career with a 4-1 win against Arsenal in the Europa League final in Baku.
The Blues finished third in the top-flight and were defeated on penalties by Premier League champions Manchester City in the Carabao Cup final.
However, Maurizio Sarri had to field constant questions about his future, and large swathes of the club’s support turned against him earlier in the campaign.
Juventus are understood to be keen on appointing the Italian boss as a replacement for Massimiliano Allegri, but David Luiz has urged the Europa League champions to keep the Italian.
Asked whether the club should keep Maurizio Sarri, David Luiz replied: ‘Yes. He’s doing great. He did great during the season even with all the difficulties we had.
‘It’s his first season at Chelsea, his first in English football. He is a great person, a great guy, a great manager, and we finished in the best way for him because we finished winning a trophy in his way.
‘Even after we conceded a goal at 3-1, we continued to play his philosophy and continued to try to score more goals. It is for the club to decide, but I am so happy with him.’
Now after Chelsea beat London rivals in the final in Baku, Arsenal will miss out on the Champions League for the third successive time.
