Chelsea to extend contract of £120,000-a-week key player

David Luiz admitted talks are ongoing over extending his contract at Stamford Bridge, but he hopes to be a Chelsea player beyond the summer transfer window.

The Brazilian centre-back’s existing deal expires at the end of the 2018/19 campaign, and as of yet, there is no breakthrough between the involved parties.

The Premier League giants have a policy where they only offer one-year contract extensions to players aged 30 and above, but David Luiz was hoping for a longer term to put pen to paper.

But the 31-year-old star hinted a deal is close and that he expects to remain at Stamford Bridge for the foreseeable future. Questioned by the Evening Standard if the former Paris Saint-Germain defender will still be at west London side next season, he replied: ‘I think so.

‘We are talking with the club. Everybody knows I love this club. I feel comfortable here and am happy here. I am doing my job very well, so I think a lot is going to happen.

‘I have the best job in the world, so I have to be motivated every single day. I love football, if I didn’t love football, I would not be playing anymore.’

David Luiz has started 34 games for the FA Cup holders this term but is expected to be rested for the last-16 Europa League tie against Dynamo Kiev, in which Chelsea hold a 3-0 lead heading into the second leg clash in the Ukrainian capital.
