Wigan Athletic forward Joe Gelhardt is being targeted by Everton and Liverpool according to Goal reports.
The 17-year-old attacker is viewed as one of the Championship’s hottest prospects and will this week represent England at Under-18 level for the first time having been called up due to his impressive form.
Gelhardt is a boyhood Liverpool fan, however, joined Wigan as a 10-year-old and his progress since has been noted by the Merseyside Reds who are now looking at signing him during the January transfer window. However, they will face stiff competition from their arch-rivals Everton.
He has been part of the FA Youth Cup set up and impressed when Wigan took on the Reds despite ending up on the losing side in the encounter.
The left-footed forward has made his senior debut for Wigan as a 16-year-old in a league cup loss to Rotherham and has since gone on to make his league appearance.
He has featured this campaign, too, coming off the bench in last Saturday’s 0-0 draw against Barnsley at the DW Stadium further emphasising the faith that Wigan have in the first-team despite his age.
Gelhardt also starred in a pre-season victory over Burnley and found back of the net gaining praise from his head-coach Paul Cook stating how comfortable he is at this level.
The starlet gave an insight into this mentality and said: “I don’t really get nervous…well I do, but in a good way!”
“It’s something I try to use to help my game rather than affect it. Rather than shy away, I like to get on the ball and express myself, and it’s going well at the moment!”
