Alberto Moreno is closing in on the move to Lazio from Liverpool with the Italian club confident of securing his services on a pre-contract deal.
The defender’s existing contract with the Reds is set to expire in the summer and after playing only five times for the first-team in all competitions this term, he will be allowed to move on in search of more regular first-team football.
Expectations were high when the 26-year-old completed a £12 million move to Liverpool from Sevilla back in 2014. However, he faded after a bright start, and after making numerous defensive howlers during his first couple of years, he has largely played a backup role under Jurgen Klopp.
James Milner took his first-team slot in the 2016-17 season after the Spaniard had committed two costly mistakes in the Europa League final defeat to Sevilla, while Andrew Robertson has been the first-choice since arriving back in 2017.
Alberto Moreno has been linked with numerous clubs on Europe in recent weeks including Sevilla, Atletico Madrid and Roma, but it appears as though Lazio have won the running to sign him on a free transfer.
The defender was in Rome on Tuesday and met up with former teammate Lucas Leiva who currently plays for the capital club.
Luis Alberto, who spent the 2013-14 campaign with Liverpool, is also a vital member of the Lazio squad.
The Spanish defender has played just twice in the Premier League this term with his last appearance coming in the 3-1 victory over Burnley in December.
