Man City are reportedly closing in on a deal for Benfica centre-back Ruben Dias in the winter transfer window. An injury crisis at the back has played its part as reigning Premier League champions Citizens find themselves eight points behind Liverpool in the title race.
Man City failed to replace former captain Vincent Kompany over the summer, and both Aymeric Laporte and John Stones are long-term absentees through injury. The Spanish coach has been forced to use Fernandinho at defence, alongside Nicolas Otamendi, but plans to sign a new centre-back in winter to solve Citizens defensive woes.
It is Man United target Portugal international who has emerged as their top option. Ruben has been heavily linked with a move to Theatre of Dreams over the past 12 months, although Man United appeared to cool their interest after landing Harry Maguire.
Dias’ current contract at Portuguese club is not due to expire until the summer of 2024, although the 22-year-old defender has a £59m release clause that his club are working on increasing. Portuguese centre-back is a regular member of the national team squad and also helped them to win the UEFA Nations League.
