Manchester United have abandoned their chase for Ivan Rakitic after becoming increasingly confident that Paul Pogba’s long-term future is at the Theatre of Dreams.
The Red Devils chiefs had been pursuing the Croatian midfielder in recent times, with concerns growing over the Frenchman’s future.
Ivan Rakitic has always maintained he wants to stay with Barcelona, but the Premier League giants have now accepted they will not sign the 31-year-old as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer plans to build his side around the France international, according to the Evening Standard.
The World Cup winner has been in sensational form since the Norwegian’s return to Old Trafford and has put on hold plans to leave the club.
The 25-year-old superstar had grown frustrated at life under Jose Mourinho, and while the club’s top brass insisted he was not for sale, there were fears that he would push for a summer exit either to Juventus or Barcelona.
However, Paul Pogba is content with life in Manchester, and a deal for the Croatia international has been put to one side.
Though Ivan Rakitic has maintained his desire to stay with the La Liga giants, his future has been questioned after the Blaugrana completed the signing of Ajax ace Frankie de Jong, who will arrive in the summer.
Barcelona were desperate to sign Pual Pogba in summer as Spanish chammpions offered £125 million plus Andre Gomes and Yerry Mina, but the Red Devils were firm and rejected the lucrative offer from European rivals.
