Man United to go all-in for 25-year-old World Cup winner

Manchester United are willing to make Raphael Varane the most expensive defender in the world as they go all out to sign the Real Madrid central defender.

Red Devils manager Jose Mourinho was left frustrated by chief executive Ed Woodward’s failure to bolster in that position during the recent transfer window.

Harry Maguire, Toby Alderweireld, Jerome Boateng and Yerry Mina were all rumoured to be on the club’s radar, but they were unable to get a deal over the line for any of their targets.

The London Evening Standard claims Ed Woodward will give the Portuguese manager the financial backing he is after next year by doubling up on his efforts to bring in the World Cup winner, who has worked with the 55-year-old in the past at Santiago Bernabeu.

The 25-year-old France international will likely cost more than £75 million – the sum Liverpool paid Southampton to sign Dutch star Virgil van Dijk earlier this year – and even then Real Madrid are reluctant to sell.

Toby Alderweireld and AC Milan’s Milan Skriniar are said to remain back-up options for the Red Devils January transfer window.
