Magpies are one of three teams interested in signing Macauley Bonne from Charlton Athletic. Leicester City and Fulham are also reportedly keen, with Zimbabwe international scoring six times in the Championship so far this campaign.
This is his first campaign in the second tier of English football, having joined from Leyton Orient in the summer. Macauley was prolific for the Addicks’, scoring 23 times in the National League last campaign. The campaign before he scored 22, ending his time there with an average of a goal every other game.
Bonne signed a three-year contract with Charlton this summer, and he’s been unfazed by the step-up in quality, working under former Magpies midfielder Lee Bowyer.
With Leicester reportedly interested too, Magpies face some stiff competition. But Newcastle lead the race because they are more likely to offer the 24-year-old striker first-team football. Foxes are currently trying to challenge Liverpool for the Premier League title, with Jamie Vardy, the top scorer in league with 16.
Steve Bruce needs his centre-forwards to start scoring, but with one goal between Joelinton, Andy Carroll and Dwight Gayle, a move for Macauley Bonne might not be a bad idea, even if he is untested at the top level. So was Jamie Vardy when he joined Leicester.
