Magpies reportedly saw a bid in the region of £24m rejected for Bundesliga centre-forward Jean-Phillipe Mateta. Newcastle United made a summer offer for the Mainz 05 striker, but their offer was thrown out by the Bundesliga club.
U21 France international was linked with Magpies continuously throughout the summer, but a move failed to materialise. Instead Newcastle United opted to push on with a £35m deal for Hoffenheim’s Joelinton before sealing a last gasp free transfer of ex-England centre-forward Andy Carroll.
Having scored an impressive 14 goals in his first campaign in the top flight in Bundesliga, Jean-Phillipe is yet to kick a ball this campaign having suffered a severe knee injury in the summer. Magpies were one of eight clubs who made a move for the footballer, who is valued in the £35m region by Mainz.
Mateta joined the German club from Lyon in 2018 with an €8m deal. He has vast potential and can become a world-class centre-forward if he continuous improvement. The 22-year-old striker is contracted with Bundesliga outfit until 2023. Newcastle United will try to sign him during the next summer transfer window.
