Rangers in the battle to sign 17-year-old promising centre-back

Gers are taking on Newcastle United and Southampton in the race to sign Carlisle United starlet Jarrad Branthwaite. The 17-year-old defender has played six games in League Two this campaign. He went into this season still awaiting the opportunity to make his senior debut.

But it has not taken long for Jarrad to gain some high-profile admirers. Rangers and Magpies have been tracking the teenager. However, it is suggested that another part leads the chase. It is Southampton who currently find themselves in pole position to sign Branthwaite.

It is noted that Southampton are desperate to uncover some bargains for English starlets, and it appears that Jarrad ticks the boxes for Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side. It is an extremely positive sign for Gers that Premier League sides are also tracking English centre-back.

Signing young footballers is always a gamble, so it is encouraging that the likes of Saints and Magpies are interested. Steven Gerrard’s men appear to have pulled off a coup in the summer by signing George Edmundson to Rangers from England’s lower leagues.

The ex-Oldham man has shown a lot of promise during the early stages of his Gers spell.
