Revealed: Why Newcastle missed out on Man United defender

Manchester United were ready to allow Axel Tuanzebe to join Newcastle United past transfer window if the Red Devils could secured a move for Leicester City’s Harry Maguire, but when they did, the Magpies were not interested in signing the defender.

The 20-times English champions signed Harry Maguire, despite Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s team struggling to agree transfer fee with the Foxes.

Steve Bruce wants to bring Axel Tuanzebe to St James’s Park before this transfer window shuts down for business.

However, any move for the 21-year-old hinges on whether Manchester United can land the English defender ahead of the 2019-20 season.

Axel Tuanzebe, who spent last campaign on loan with Aston Villa in the second tier, has featured heavily for Manchester United during their preparations for the new season.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has already lost one centre-back in the build-up to the clash with bitter rivals Chelsea having seen Eric Bailly pick up a knee problem which will sideline him for five months.

Meanwhile, Newcastle United goalkeeper Freddie Woodman has emerged as a transfer target for two Championship clubs.

The 22-year-old could not break into the first team at St James’ Park and has been limited to four appearances for the Magpies, all of which have come in the FA Cup.

That has seemingly left the youngster with a decision to make regarding his future, and The Chronicle claims that the Englishman is pushing for a loan move away from the North-East side.

Freddie Woodman has just 12 months remaining on his deal, leaving Newcastle to contemplate a new contract for the former England Under-21 international.
