Memphis Depay is a wanted man after his career revival at Lyon, with Spurs being talked up as potential suitors. Few would have expected this when Netherlands international flopped at Old Trafford a few years ago, but the attacker has looked a completely different footballer in his time in Ligue 1.
This improvement in form is now seeing Memphis linked as a £50m transfer target for Tottenham and Man United inserted a buy-back clause into the deal to let the footballer go.
It is not clear from the report quite how much Red Devils would need to pay for the return of Depay, but one imagines Man United won’t have to break the bank for Depay if they negotiated a fee at a time when his stock will have been a great deal lower.
This should give them the edge over Spurs in any potential transfer battle, and based on the 25-year-old attacker’s recent form and Red Devils struggle in the front-line, they should be preparing to take full advantage.
The Dutch forward had looked a real star in his time in the Eredivisie, but perhaps wasn’t ideally suited to the tactics of Dutch manager, who struggled in general to get most of the club performing to a high enough standard.
